Jack Bell

b. 1950

Jack Bell has practised as an artist for many years: he paints and makes carvings. Jack is credited with many of the murals that adorn Aurukun public spaces.

Jack’s totems are Brolga/Dingo from his mother and Mumpa (Ghostman) from his father. He also carves Dugong and Dolphin.

“I love painting, to keep my culture alive. Keeping the culture going is for the young ones coming alone. Show them what we do, how to do it, to keep it going, passing it on. This has happened all the time since I was a young boy. I grew up in Palm Island then I came back to help my father and to keep my culture alive. I love what I do.” JACK BELL
