Christian Thompson

b. 1978, Gawler, South Australia

Christian Thompson is one of Australia’s leading conceptual installation artists. He is a Bidjara man of the Kunja Nation from southwest Queensland and is also of German Jewish heritage.  His mother’s family is from Gundagai in New South Wales. Thompson spurns historical classification, as in his quote: ”my work, like myself, is in a constant state of flux”

Thompson’s work explores the relationships between objects, space and history using a variety of media, including photography and video. He has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally, including in Thailand, The Netherlands, Finland, Singapore, Canada, France, Italy and New Caledonia. His work is represented in several major public gallery collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne and the Aboriginal Art Museum Collection in the Netherlands.

Thompson also works as a freelance writer and curator. Included amongst his exhibitions are: ’What’s Love Got To Do With It?, RMIT Gallery, Melbourne; ’High Tide – Contemporary Indigenous Photography’, Linden Centre for Contempoary Art, Melbourne; ’If You Only Knew’, City Gallery, Melbourne and ’White Hot – New Art from Different Places’, Hush Hush Gallery and City Lights, Melbourne. In 2000, Thompson was curatorial assistant to curator Brenda L Croft for the exhibition 'Beyond the Pale’, which was part of the 2000 Adelaide Biennale of Australian Art.

Thompson's writing includes: ’The Entrapped Tigress’, ’Operation Honesty – The Art of Gordon Hookey’, ’Code Name Koorie’, ’Fear and Desire – The Art of Fiona Foley’ and ’Journey Down the Road’.
